Depending on what you call an .exe, the true largest possible .exe could be a bit larger than 2 GB with embedded resources. Some DaVinci Resolve installer files, for instance, are well over 3 GB (although I'm not sure where the limit is with this).

As I understand, the windows DLLs such as kernel32 contain functions that are wrappers for the syscalls. Windows doesn't really guarantee that syscalls are backwards compatible, and the only supported way of using them is through the wrappers. But if you throw compatibility through the Window, couldn't you disassemble the DLLs and inline the syscall that's being wrapped? Not that I actually know how any of this works, I'm more of a Linux guy.

Over they years, Windows developers give zero consideration of the size of their programs. I'm glad to see someone demonstrating it is possible to write functionally interesting programs in the <1KB range. I remember this DOS program that printed the directory structure of the disk using ASCII art, which was 512B. I believe this was a .com file, and only ran on DOS; pre-Windows anything days. Clearly this made heavy use of BIOS INT calls to output to the screen. This is still impressive.

1 neat trick I've used back in the day ( C64 era) on isometric games is to treat everything as background, then everything that's below and to the left of the character within a box 2x2 the character size ( 0,0 is bottom left) render those tiles as sprites with priority after the main character. That's way less expensive even a potato could run it glitch free. Assuming there are enough sprites/multiplex slots available.

Still better than AAA games these days

exe> encoded 'EXECUTALBE' sequence.. the file 'size' is almost irrelevant but the bare minimum should be binary (.xslb) if it is 5mb or below, the information must be encoded otherwise it can't be executed upon entry. ;p
